My name is Martin.
When I went to live in a residential home I was 18 years old and had always lived in children's homes before, I had a lot of problems and was 'challenging'. The staff supported me with my behaviour and I stayed at the home for 3 years. Living in the home I learned how to do my own washing and cooking and how to do things for myself. I lived there for 3 years then moved to one of the flats which made me more independent but I still had the same staff to support me, I enjoyed living in the flat and being more independent.
I now live in my own flat in the community living on my own, I still need help with some things like managing my money and shopping, I have a support worker to do this with me but I only need them for 12 hours each week now. I also get to do the activities I like with my support worker we go to the boxing club and running.
I am happy that I have been able to learn how to live on my own but I know if I need help my support worker will help me.
